Education

Duke Palliative Care supports education for a broad range of leaners of virtually every discipline.  From our innovative APP externship to our Compassionate Care Conference (‘3C’), our educators reach more than 2,000 learners every year, with tailored, skills-based content.

HPM Fellowship

The Duke Center for Palliative Care’s mission is to provide primary palliative care education across Duke Health, which allows for strong interdisciplinary collaboration. The graduate medical education programs below highlight the work our palliative care clinicians and educators provide to Duke University interns, residents, and fellows in Duke GME clinical training programs.

The Duke Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship was established in 2005 and it has a tradition of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research. The Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited program designed to train future leaders in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program has trained more that 40 fellows since 2005.

Palliative Care Grand Rounds

The Duke Palliative Care Grand Rounds is a weekly seminar series designed to support continuing medical education for Duke Palliative Care faculty, staff, trainees and their partners and collaborators across the health system and beyond.

Palliative Care Grand Rounds presenters and topics are selected to provide attendees with the latest evidence and knowledge regarding current issues in hospice and palliative medicine. PCGR occurs every Thursday at 12-1p.m.

3C - Compassionate Care Conference

The Duke Compassionate Care Conference (3C) is an interdisciplinary dialogue focused on exploring the experience of being healthcare providers in unique, challenging, and powerful situations. Through shared stories and conversation, these rounds aim to strengthen our ability to be compassionate, resilient healers and teammates as we deliver transformative care to our patients.

Bass Connections

Duke Palliative Care is proud to lead a Bass Connections Project, Developing a Roadmap for Goals of Care Conversations at Duke. Undergraduate and graduate students who participate in this project work one-on-one with research mentors and also contribute to group products in a classroom setting. These activities provide learners the chance to become familiar with healthcare approaches to improving patient-centered care, engage with clinical stakeholders (such as providers, patients and family), contribute to publications and presentations, participate in data management/analysis, learn how to communicate within a multidisciplinary team, and benefit from professional development and feedback.

PCIG

The Palliative Care Interest Group (PCIG) is a student-run group associated with the Department of Palliative Care at Duke. Our goal is to help medical students understand the role of palliative care in all fields of medicine. We host events focused on learning more about palliative care, communication around difficult topics like death and serious illness, and the path to careers within palliative care. We also help students connect with clinical and research mentors within the department.

Duke Navigators

The Duke Navigators Program (DNP) is a student-led, year-long program that aims to help
health professions students gain experience working with seriously ill patients and become more comfortable with discussions in end-of-life care.
